Situation beyond government’s control due to inability to take right decisions: Nahid
The interim government could have acted more responsibly in the plane crash that took place at Milestone College in Uttara, the capital, on Tuesday evening, said Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam. He said, “The situation that has arisen since yesterday till today is actually the government could have acted more responsibly and humanely. We feel that the situation has gone beyond their control due to the government’s failure to act responsibly and take the right steps at the right time. Today, many incidents have occurred throughout the day, you have seen the incidents at the secretariat.”
Situation beyond government’s control due to inability to take right decisions: Nahid
Nahid Islam said this at an emergency press conference at the Jatiya Nagorik Party’s central office in Bangla Motor in the capital. Expressing deep sorrow for the victims of the plane crash, NCP convener Nahid Islam said, “First of all, we, the Jatiya Nagorik Party, are expressing solidarity with the six-point demands of the students protesting at Milestone College. They have presented some very reasonable demands and the government should implement these demands as soon as possible.’
Nahid Islam also commented that some advisors are behaving irresponsibly in this incident. He said, ‘We have seen some advisors behaving very irresponsibly. Especially the education advisor. We got to know last night between 3 and 4 am that the HSC exam will have to be postponed and other advisors are not getting through to him by calling him. So if a government is in such a situation, there is no coordination among its advisors and this country is in an emergency situation, where the entire student community is traumatized. It is taking 3-4 am to take a decision on this whole incident. There is a kind of uncertainty about it. But if they had behaved responsibly, then such a situation would not have arisen.’
Nahid Islam said, ‘We have been seeing since last night that there is a kind of campaign to hide the body. The correct statement should have come from the government at that point. What really happened and so that there is no chance of such an incident happening. The government should immediately reveal how many people were in the school at that time, including students, staff, and teachers. The government should update this regularly so that there are no such rumors and if such an incident of missing bodies has really happened, the government should publish accurate information and disseminate it widely. For that, the exact number of people killed and injured should be monitored.’
Nahid mentioned that there should be an impartial investigation into the entire incident. He said, why did such a plane crash actually happen. An investigation committee should be formed from the highest levels of the government and experts from outside the government should be there, and representatives of the school authorities should be present. Nahid Islam said that such steps should be taken to prevent such incidents from happening in the future, including creating a rescue team and a medical team in the long term.
Above all, Nahid Islam urged everyone, the student community and the public, to be patient and calm. He called on all political parties and social organizations to stand by the affected families and students, support and cooperate with the government’s steps, and ensure that no one takes advantage of the situation that has arisen.
The press conference was moderated by Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizens Party. Tasnim Zara, Senior Joint Member Secretary of the party, also spoke.
